Happy Friday everyone. I hope you are all finding August to be an enjoyable month, and a respite from all of the craziness in the world today.
Many of you know that I took an LOA at the start of August. It’s not every day a fantastic opportunity for career development falls in your lap. I embraced it, and I have been riding this wave now for the last 7 days. It’s very exciting for me, and I’m learning a lot about myself and what I’m capable of.
There has been a downside. I may be only seven days into my LOA, but it is absolutely clear that this will be my life for the remainder of the year. My lifestyle does not, and will not, allow me to continue on in my duties as Chairperson. I had hoped to wait out until the end of the year so that I do not doom my replacement to not be able serve up to two terms. The 22nd Fleet has always had stable leadership, so that is not my worry. The Officers the Council has selected have performed admirably throughout the year, and have done so in the last week, especially when faced with some difficult and unpleasant challenges.
I’m afraid I must give them, and the GM Council, another challenge. It is with profound regret that I must announce to the GM Council my resignation as Chairperson.
When I founded the 22nd Fleet in May 2019, I could never have imagined the wonderful ride that was waiting for me. The experience was rewarding in many ways, some of which I’m still coming to realize. I’ve said repeatedly that I would have been perfectly happy with this organization being a small group, never getting much larger than its founding membership. We started with 12 sims across 8 Game Managers or so, and that’s grown in 15 months to more than 40 games with over 35 Game Managers. That, to me, is the greatest testimony for this group.
I have no intention of leaving entirely. I remain committed to both the Black Hawk and the Lexington as its Game Manager. I have plenty of story ideas for both, and I will see that they get told, even if the pace must slow down to accommodate it.
But I must step aside and allow someone with the time and energy to continue to lead this group. So, as of now, I am no longer your Chairperson. I’m just a fellow GM and Player. Stephen will be Acting Chair until the Council determines my official successor. I do want to take a moment and publicly thank Stephen for all he’s done. He’s been by my side since Day 1, from the founding of the Fleet. He’s been my sounding board, my right hand, and an immense help throughout the easy and hard times. There are many who helped the 22nd Fleet become what it is today, but I could not have done any of this without him. I can say with absolute certainty that I am leaving this fleet in excellent hands.
I’m now just another GM. As I am the asset owner for the website, Discord, and other properties, I’ll likely retain those as we sort out what to do with the things I have control over.
But I want to encourage you all. Don’t be saddened by this. For the last 6+ years as a GM, I have always told my players that Real Life comes first. I must now take my own advice. I’m happy that I get to go out on a high with the Fleet in prime position to boldly going into the future. I’m happy that I still get to be a part of it, and to do what I love most… write.
I close now with one of my favorite quotes, from a song of all things.
“Life’s like a movie. Write your own ending. Keep believing. Keep pretending. We’ve done just what we’ve set out to do. Thanks to the lovers, the dreamers, and you.”Kermit the Frog, “Finale: The Magic Store”
Thank you all, and I’ll see you in the Lounges. 🙂
